Hofstra University is saddened by the loss of Professor Robert Katz, Department of Accounting, Taxation and Legal Studies in Business at the Frank G. Zarb School of Business. Professor Katz served on the Zarb faculty since 1975 and for many years was the Chaykin Distinguished Teaching Professor of Taxation. For 20 years Professor Katz organized and supervised the Hofstra Tax Preparation Program under which accounting students prepare tax returns free of charge for senior citizens and needy taxpayers throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties. He received the Commissioner of Internal Revenue Service’s highest award for community service for his efforts on behalf of this program. “Bob Katz was an outstanding teacher,” said Dr. Herman A. Berliner, Dean of the Zarb School of Business. “Thousands of students, over four decades, benefited from his extraordinary knowledge, his energy, dynamism, his impressive communication skills, his commitment to our students and his support for his colleagues. We are a better University because Bob Katz was a member of our faculty.” Professor Katz was named Hofstra’s Teacher of the Year for 1978-1979, and in 1997 he was honored by the Hofstra University Corporate Development Council for his service to the University and outstanding teaching. Professor Katz was a senior partner and founding member of Katz, Bernstein & Katz, LLP, where he was responsible for the supervision of the firm’s estate planning activities and development of highly sophisticated estate plans. He was also directly involved in many large income tax planning and corporate matters including shareholder agreements and business sales. In addition, he lectured extensively and had edited and contributed journal articles, book chapters and authored a book titled, Federal Income Tax, which was used to prepare candidates for the
